In December 2015, I documented one of the few mosques in Haiti. In this series, I photographed The At-Tawheed Mosque in downtown Port-au-Prince. Islam is not a popular religion in the pre-dominantly Catholic country. This particular mosque is also a school that is open to everyone regardless of their religion.
Historically, Islam has played a crucial role in the fight for freedom and independence in Haiti and the island of Hispaniola. The Wolof people, who were Senegambian and Muslim, led the first revolution against slavery in Hispaniola in 1521. Because of the Wolof people, the fight for freedom rippled across Hispaniola and the Americas.
