FANMI M, MEN YO! (2022)

Fanmi M, Men Yo! ("My Family, There They Are!" in Haitian Kreyòl) is a series of sculptures and sound pieces birthed and inspired by the Haitian Queer community and reality. Specifically, the sculptures are abstract portraits of queer Haitians in history, culture, and within my intimate circle. Each textile sculpture is accompanied by a sound piece created in collaboration with queer Haitians in my life, in activism, in art, in law, in culture, and more. Many of the voices you will hear are from folks who have participated in my Haitian Queer Educational and Artmaking workshop during my Lakou NOU residency at Haiti Cultural Exchange.

Additionally, the sculptures are also an homage to the Haitian Vodou Lwas— specifically, Lwa’s that watch over and guide LGBTQAI+ people. From the unbreable love of Èzili Freda to the carefree and expressive nature of the Gede family, this project is a reflection of the innovative, resilient, barrier-breaking qualities of our Lwa's which trickle down to us Queer Haitians. It is also a celebration and acknowledgment of the fluidity of Queer Haitians and our ability to imagine and create kind futures for the Haitian queer community in Haiti and around the world.
